What's new in Momiji Go

What each version of Momiji Go changed for players, newest first.

0.4.0 · 7 October 2026

  • Find a player. The two-player panel has a FIND A PLAYER page beside the one for a friend's room code. Pick 9×9, 13×13 or 19×19 and you are paired with someone who picked the same board, first come, first served. A clock counts the wait, and after half a minute alone the panel offers a game against Lord Tsukikage instead.
  • Momiji Go still has no server of its own: while you wait, your browser connects directly to the other players waiting for that board. The privacy policy describes how.
  • Two taps. A third way to play by hand in a headset, chosen with the touch key on the settings page. The first touch marks the crossing with a ring and the second plays the stone, so a slip of the finger costs nothing but the ring.
  • A faster first visit. On a Quest 3 the game is ready in less than half the time, about 2.5 seconds instead of 7 on a fast connection, and downloads about a quarter less before the garden appears.
  • A lighter offline copy. It keeps the lettering of the languages you use rather than all five, so a first visit fetches about 0.6 MB after the garden appears instead of 8 MB.
  • The main panel takes your pinch. In a headset, with a hand resting near the board or a bowl, the panel's buttons lit up but did not press. A pinch aimed at a panel now always goes to the panel.
  • Fixed: an update that finished installing while the page was loading waited for your next visit. It now arrives on the visit that notices it.

0.3.2 · 3 October 2026

  • Traditional Chinese (繁體中文). The whole game, the twelve lessons included, in traditional characters and worded the way Taiwan words it. It comes after simplified Chinese on the language button, which now reads 简体中文 and 繁體中文 so the two can be told apart. A browser set to Chinese for Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau opens in it.
  • The lesson panel in a headset. During a lesson the panel beside the board grows taller, and its bottom edge used to sink into the tatami dais. It now hangs a little higher and clears the dais in every lesson.

0.3.1 · 2 October 2026

  • Fixed: your hands and controllers in a headset. On momijigo.bruna.world they followed you but were never drawn, in VR or in AR. They are now.
  • Their models come from jsDelivr, a public service for open-source files. They are downloaded the first time they appear and then kept with the game's offline copy, so they are drawn without a connection and not downloaded again. The privacy policy has a new section on what jsDelivr sees.

0.3.0 · 1 October 2026

Momiji Go can now be played in your own room.

  • AR. On a headset with passthrough, such as a Meta Quest 3, ENTER AR sets the game down in your room: the board, Lord Tsukikage, the bowls, the cushions, the incense and the panels, with maple leaves still falling around you. The garden, its light and its shadows stay behind. ENTER AR is on the landing page and on the main panel.
  • In AR the play area starts with the tatami 25 cm above your floor, and the leaves fall within the size of a room and land on the floor.
  • Board height. In VR and in AR the board can be lowered or raised, 5 cm at a press, to suit a chair, a sofa or the floor. VR and AR each remember their own height in your browser.
  • A settings page. The main panel now holds only the game. Music, language, the touch mode, the view and the board height are on its own SETTINGS page.

0.2.1 · 1 October 2026

  • How to play a stone, in a headset. The YOUR MOVE card now shows it: a little board with your bowl beside it, and a hand playing on it in each of the ways the main panel offers. Your own way plays first, and a line under the steps says where to switch.
  • The card stays until you play or press GOT IT, instead of going by itself after 20 seconds. In a headset it is a little smaller and sits higher, so it clears the board.
  • Zoom at a desk. The mouse wheel, or a two-finger scroll on a trackpad, zooms the view as a pinch does. RESET VIEW puts it back.
  • Fixed: going into VR straight from the landing page, with ENTER VR or the browser's own VR button, skipped the "First time playing Go?" question. It is now asked on a panel in the garden, with the same answers and "Don't show this again".

0.2.0 · 28 September 2026

A game against Lord Tsukikage now helps a new player through it, a finished game is counted out on the board, and past games teach.

  • Hint. The HINT key first rings the neighbourhood of the move the strongest level would play, then, pressed again, the point itself and what it does.
  • Undo. UNDO takes your last move back, together with his answer to it.
  • As many as the level allows. Hints and take-backs are each three a game at levels 1 to 3, two at level 4, one at level 5, and none at levels 6 and 7 or in a game against another person.
  • The count. A finished game is counted on the board one colour at a time, both scores climbing on a plate over the board, which then becomes the score line of the result card.
  • Ending the game from the pass notice. After your opponent passes, the "you can end the game" line, on the red notice over the board and on the scoreboard, ends the game when pressed.
  • Past games teach. They say why the better move was better, in the lessons' words, and play its line out. They replay themselves (Play and Pause) and fold to a tab on a phone. After a game, the HINT key opens it at your costliest move.
  • On the board. A ko point is marked with a square, and the last-move ring swells as the stone lands.
  • Lord Tsukikage. His sleeves bend at the elbow when he reaches out to play, and his hands stay on his lap when he bows or leans in.
  • Less work for a Quest. The music is prepared ahead of time, and the headset does less work each frame, with no change to how the garden looks.
  • Fixed: on a Quest, the text on the panels blinked while the score was being counted. Straight after you ended a game, the pass notice still said it was your opponent's move. NEW GAME during a replay put the old board back instead of starting a game. Later the same day, two more: Lord Tsukikage's sleeves flickered as he reached out to play, and the leaf shade slid across him as he moved.
